Warning of an imminent strike at Iran by Israel

Summary:  Another war warning about a strike by Israel at Iran.  Unlike the many others reported on this website, this one comes from people whose words deserve attention.  Let’s hope they over-estimate the odds.

Here is a warning of an imminent strike by Israel at Iran, given by Pat Lang and other intel professionals in an op-ed posted at Consortium News on 3 August 2010.  Since they do not have a website, the authenticity of this is unknown.  If true,  (Update:  Pat Lang confirms that the op-ed is genuine)  {T}heir warning deserves attention.  They present little evidence supporting their forecast of an attack “as early as this month”, but their analysis deserves to be read in full.

As the posts listed below show, an attack by Israel has low odds of crippling Iran’s atomic weapon program — with catastrophic consequences for Israel.  Perhaps the US, too.  Unfortunately that only makes such a strike unlikely, not impossible.

(2)  Background information about VIPS

From Wikipedia:

VIPS is a group of current and former officials of the United States Intelligence Community, including some from the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), the U.S. State Department’s Intelligence Bureau, and the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA). This group issued a letter before the 2003 invasion of Iraq stating that, “The narrow focus on Resolution 1441 has diverted attention from the wider picture. It is crucial that we not lose sight of that. Intelligence community analysts are finding it hard to make themselves heard above the drumbeat for war.”

The group was formed in January 2003 as a “coast-to-coast enterprise” to protest the use of faulty intelligence “upon which the US/UK invasion of Iraq was based
